Communication and Information Systems
A telecommunications system exists to transmit
information. It consists of five essential elements:
- Computers for processing data
- Terminals or other input/output devices (Micro
computers
often act as terminals and sensors may be appropriate in some
applications)
- Communication channels which link sender and
receiver. The communication channel may be:
- Wire for signals carried electrically
- Fibre optic for signals carried optically
- Satellite (direct or via booster station) for
signals carried by radio
- Communications hardware - such as modems and
multiplexors which are responsible for supporting the data transmission
- Communications software to control the movement of
data through the network.
A communication network may be a wide area network (WAN)
or a
local area network (LAN) or a mixture of both. Some networks are public
in which case anyone can use them - usually for a fee or it may be
private as would be the case with a company WAN linking branch offices
with a central computer.
