About NHSnet
NHSnet is a secure wide area network developed exclusively for the NHS
and available from two service providers: BT and Cable & Wireless.
A managed message handling service is provided by
Syntegra NHSnet is also known as
the NHS Intranet, and Access to
NHSweb and it is the largest Virtual Private Network in Europe providing a:
- Similar range of communication and information services to that of
the Internet
- Dedicated NHS network with guaranteed service and availability
- Secure and controlled environment for healthcare information

Services Available on NHSnet
| Electronic Mail (e-mail): |
The ability to send free text messages, with attachment documents
if required, to recipients on NHSnet and the Internet. |
| Electronic Data Interchange (EDI): |
Such as Registration and Items of Service sent directly from the
practice system to the HA computer system. Pathology
and radiology results from hospitals to GP practice systems. Approved Third
Party System can communicate via NHSnet to support GP systems. |

| Remote support for Clinical Systems: |
System suppliers can communicate via NHSnet to support GP
systems. |

How can organisations connect to NHSnet?
NHS organisations connect via:
- PSTN connection
- telephone line
- modem and security ID card (strong authentication)
- ISDN connection: digital telephone line, terminal adapter or router.
- Fixed Link: leased line, router.

telecommunications within the NHS, including how to apply for a connection to
NHSnet.
