Networking Questions
Exercise 1
- Two friends each have a PC - one has a laptop which is wireless compatible. The other has a desktop machine with no wireless components.
They decide to spend the weekend playing a game that has a two player two machine mode.
In order to do this they need to connect to two machines together. Both PCs run windows XP as an operating system both have adequate hardware to play the stand alone version of the game.
- What additional hardware do they need to play the game?
Bear in mind they wish to do this as cheaply as possible.
- What type of network will they create.
- Why does the fact that both machines will be in deferent locations after the weekend mean that there is only one possible answer to question (b)?
- A small company owns an office building with 3 offices in which there are 4 PCs. The company purchases a new A1 paper laser co lour printer for a little over £2000. Three of the machines will need to use this printer. The company boss thinks it is best to place the printer in the front office - where there is a PC that is only used to make appointments (not printed on large paper). At present the machines are not networked. Prepare a report saying what the advantages and disadvantages of networking all 4 machines.
- Our School owns some 300PCs. They are nearly all attached to a single network.
- From a students perspective what are the real advantages of having all the machines working on a single network?
- At present the network employs a network manager and a network technician. Does the network create these jobs? Would we require more or less technical support if all the machines were stand lone?
- If the schools machines where not networked what facilities would you (as a student) not have?
