Network Topology
Topology is a word used for the map that is made of the shape of a
networks cables. There are several different layouts that can be used. THis
page describes the three most common types. Each sytle of network has
advantages and disadvantages. They are each used in certain types of
enviroment.
The BUS network

The GCSE ICT revision guide calls this a
line network - I have never heard it called that before. In a bus network a
single cable connects all of the computers and other components together.
Messages are sent from every computer in both directions down the cable. The
bus network is the cheepest style of network and by far the most common type.
These networks are slowed by excessive traffic; the performance level is not
constant. When the central cable breaks the whole network fails. |
