Spreadsheets
Modern spread sheets can perform a great range of tasks. Spreadsheets can display and process data in a structUred way. The most commonly used features of a spreadsheet are:
- To record and organise Data
- To search data
- To perform calculations based on all kinds of data
- To produce graphs and charts.
Point three is often misunderstood. People often thing spreadsheet are only used to do mathematical calculations. Whilst they do this and they do it well. Spreadsheets can perform a range of other functions they can manipulate data of all sorts. In the spreadsheet above the cell C2 contains a formula that uses the data in column A to create the name shown. Could you make a formula like this? One answer is shown at the bottom of the page. Spreadsheets can manipulate dates times and can perform logical tests like working out if today is your birthday.
In industry spreadsheets are used by scientists and engineers to perform calculations. They are used in business to keep simple accounts, to create invoices and inventories. Teachers use them for mark books There are hundreds of other uses.
